God or Mammon

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.  Matthew 6:24

Judas and the Children of Israel had a common thread that led to their demise; they loved the things of this world more than they loved their Lord.  Judas’ betrayal was not the 30 pieces of silver and the kiss in the Garden of Gethsemane, but his love for money and glory on this earth.  The Children of Israel craved the meat and the food from Egypt even though it was their place of bondage rejected the heavenly manna.  Both got what they craved and both were bitterly dissapointed in the end.  Judas realized his sin and out of guilt committed suicide while the Children of Israel fed their faces with raw quail flesh starting a severe plague killing many.  The bottom line in both cases was clear.  Neither the Children of Israel nor Judas Iscariot could serve both the Lord and the things of this world.

We cannot believe that Judas would betray His Master or the Children of Israel would crave the things of Egypt where they were slaves, but are any different?  Our sinful human flesh, if left unchecked, will crave the things of this world that moves us away from the Lord and into the bondage and slavery of sin.  Both Judas and Israel had opportunity to turn from their evil ways, but they eventually were consumed with the things of this world which led them to push aside the Lord.  Let us not repeat the follies of Judas and the Children of Israel and allow the Lord Jesus Christ to reign following Him by faith even when we do not completely understand the path.  For the life of faith is not about our human reasoning and understanding, but about surrender and trust in His power alone.
